The Severe Duty motors with grey cast iron frames are especially rugged
This makes them the first choice for applications in the toughest of environmental conditions. They have outstanding performance both in dust loading and in vibration as well as in the aggressive atmospheres that prevail in the petrochemical and process industries. Their design supports optimized heat dissipation and offers the same handling as the general purpose variants.
Our well-proven 1LE1 motors up to motor efficiency class IE4 are available for line (DOL) operation. With the motors in the efficiency class IE4 the energy consumption can be reduced by up to 3 % compared to IE3 motors. If you choose the 1LE1 platform you can switch to IE4 motors also at a later date, because all efficiency classes, from IE2 to IE4, have the same power rating – shaft height assignment. With Severe Duty motors in IE4 you opt for robust fixed speed drives on a future-proof platform.
Motors from the VSD10 line and VSD4000 line are designed for variable-speed operation with converters. The invest optimized system of SIMOTICS VSD10 motor and SINAMICS frequency converter offers a simple selection via catalogue or engineering tool and fast commissioning via motor code for preconfigured drive parameters. The system comprising synchronous-reluctance technology and SINAMICS G120 converter is the best choice for especially energy-efficient operation. Synchronous-reluctance technology ensures especially high efficiencies in the partial load range and high dynamic performance – for high process quality.

Synchronous-reluctance technology (VSD4000 line)
The SIMOTICS SD reluctance motors of the VSD4000 line have been exclusively designed for converter operation and specifically optimized for the SINAMICS G120. When compared to systems with induction motors, synchronous-reluctance technology sets itself apart as a result of its high efficiency - especially in the partial load range and its high dynamic performance. In the first step, this innovative technology is available in the power range from 0.55 to 30 kW. The reluctance motors and the SINAMICS G120 converters have been specifically coordinated to operate with one another. Commissioning is especially simple as a result of the motor code on the motor rating plate. The converter vector control ensures optimum operating behaviour.

Asynchronous technology (VSD10 line)
The cast-iron motors of the VSD10 line offer a perfectly matched integrated drive system together with the frequency converters of the SINAMICS G120 series for applications with variable speed operation. The frequency converter duty motors are exclusively designed for operation with frequency converters and they are specially optimized for SINAMICS for an economic overall system.
The active component of the SIMOTICS motor is designed for the power module of the SINAMICS frequency converter for a low power loss in the motor and therefore a high efficiency over the complete life cycle.
For extra fast commissioning the motor code on the nameplate can be entered into the operating panel BOP of the SINAMICS drive which ensures preconfigured parameters. SIMOTICS frequency converter duty motors and SINAMICS drives are internationally applicable because they comply with local legislation and MEPS requirements.
The optimum fixed speed motor for various demands
The following lines are available for severe duty applications:
- Basic Line: rugged, reliable motors for machinery construction
- Performance Line: motors for the process industry with reinforced bearings and more rugged paint finish to meet requirements that go beyond the Basic Line
- Eagle Line: motors for export to NAFTA; they fulfil ULR and CSA requirements, and also comply to the efficiency specifications of EISA. Also here, the following applies:
SIMOTICS motors offer solutions for the widest range of requirements worldwide. The motors can be operated with frequency converter. Therefore the basic constraints according to catalogue D 81.1 have to be considered.
Compact design
The size of a motor frequently plays a significant role in machines. This is the reason that 1LE1 motors in IE2 and IE3 are, as a maximum, as long as their predecessors from the 1LG series in IE2.
An additional highlight: in some instances, IE3 motors fit in the same frame as motors with IE2. It goes without saying that the efficiency classes do not differ regarding their shaft height, which is why the mechanical interface to the machine always stays the same. In turn, this facilitates an essentially straightforward efficiency upgrade to IE3 without having to adapt the mechanical design of a machine.
Especially efficient line operation
The line motors in the efficiency class IE4 are available as catalogue spectrum in the power range from 2.2 kW to 200 kW. IE4 is the consequent continuation of the 1LE1 platform with cast-iron housing with the same power rating – shaft height assignment as IE2 and IE3. With IE4 the efficiency can be increased by up to 3 % compared to IE3.
More power
Also in the Severe Duty area, increased power motors can be precisely the solution if the space available for a standard motor is not sufficient. The reason for this is that these motors have the same power rating but in the next smaller shaft height.
Frequency converter duty motors
Cast-iron motors of the VSD10 line and the VSD4000 line are optimized for operation with frequency converters of the SINAMICS G120 series and comply with the MEPS requirements world-wide. The code on the motor rating plate ensures that predefined parameters are available in the converter.
